Working for Northern Michigan Families

Fertility Fraud

HB 4178 -The idea behind this bipartisan package of bills came from a constituent in Grand Traverse County. It creates a new felony for health professionals who provide false/misleading information about fertility donors, or uses a donor not specifically requested by the patient.

I was shocked to hear that this wasn’t already illegal. In Michigan, we have one of the most prolific cases of a doctor using his own sample to impregnate dozens of women. The children born from these procedure need to know who they are and the people who lied to their parents need to pay the consequences for showing no ethics toward their patients.

Childcare Package

HB 5048- This is part of a larger childcare package, but it was meant to deal with a very local issue in Grand Traverse County. Day Cares have a hard time finding locations based on state rules. This bill loosened a bill on colocation with other businesses, while still keeping children and their caregivers safe. The package, as a whole, works to lessen government burdens making childcare less costly, and increase availability.

Barber Apprenticeships

HB 4207- A local Grand Traverse County Barber was having a hard time finding people to work in his shop because they weren’t licensed. He even offered to pay for them to go downstate to Lansing (the closest Barber School). This bill creates a barber apprenticeship similar to the cosmetology apprenticeship. We just heard that they have their first apprentice creating more opportunity right here at home.

Free Trail Weekend for Snowmobilers

HB 4206- One thing we love in Northern Michigan is being outside in all seasons. This bill will create a free trail for snowmobiles, similar to the free fishing or ORV trail weekends. We have thousands of miles of snowmobile trails in Michigan, let’s encourage people to get their sleds out, or bring them up north and get on the trails!
