Learn how John Roth is fighting for Northern Michigan families and businesses.
I have been honored to serve as a state representative for two years. Listening to my constituents, I have taken your concerns to Lansing to fight for Northern Michigan families and values.
As a life-long resident of Northern Michigan, I have been committed to working for you. I will continue to stand up to Lansing special interests and lobbyists and fight for what’s best for the Grand Traverse region. I’d be honored to earn your vote.
It’s an honor to serve as your Representative, and I’m focused on working to improve the lives of every Michigander. The challenges before us are significant, but I’m committed to advancing policies that put small businesses, workers, and families first.
With a Republican majority in the House, we have an opportunity to fight for common-sense solutions and make real, positive change. Together, we can make 2025 a year of progress for our district and for Michigan.
State Representative John Roth
Earlier this month, I sponsored and helped pass crucial legislation to keep the tip credit intact and block disastrous paid sick leave mandates that would crush Michigan’s small business owners.
This fight came in response to a harmful Michigan Supreme Court ruling that would impose unrealistic costs on small businesses, putting them on the edge of collapse. If we don’t take action, the consequences will be catastrophic: prices will rise, fewer people will dine out, and many of our beloved family-owned restaurants will close their doors.
These businesses aren’t just job providers; they’re the heart of our communities. If we don’t act now, family-owned restaurants and local businesses — some that have been around for generations — will disappear, leaving our main streets as empty shells. This isn’t just policy; it’s about survival, and I’m standing up to protect these businesses and the people who rely on them.
I’m committed to making sure workers still earn a fair wage, which is why my plan also ensures the minimum wage will rise gradually over the next several years, but in a way that doesn’t destroy businesses or force drastic price hikes. We need a system that works for both workers and small businesses.
Another top priority as we begin 2025 is protecting small businesses from overbearing sick leave mandates that are so convoluted even lawyers struggle to understand them. Small businesses need the flexibility to work with their employees, not be bogged down by laws that don’t fit their needs.
From day one, defending Michigan’s hardworking restaurant staff and small business owners has been my focus, and I will continue to fight to ensure their jobs and livelihoods are protected. I won’t stop until we get it right.
As the Senate has now passed its own version of the legislation, it’s clear that progress is being made. Now, it’s time for us to come together and find a compromise that works for everyone. Let’s ensure that Michigan’s small businesses and workers get the protection and support they deserve as we move forward.
The plan to restore Tip Credit. “In Grand Traverse County, the average server’s earnings are around $30 per hour with tips,” Roth said. “Eliminating the tip credit would slash the average take-home pay for servers and bartenders in the county by 50% over the next five years."

In Northern Michigan, across our state and, in fact, the entire country, we are voting against extremism and the woke left. In our district – we are voting for someone who is a permanent resident, life-long Northern Michigander and most importantly, someone who gets things done.
Working on issues that impact Northern Michigan families such as Workforce Housing and Childcare solutions, helping businesses recover from the covid shutdowns, and bringing additional mental health services to the area.
